About Storminator™

Stormwater runoff is the largest polluter of urban waterways globally.

Untreated stormwater runoff is destroying the integrity of our urban rivers. Highly ecotoxic metals originate from every metal roof each time it rains. Over 70% (residential) to 91% (industrial/commercial) roofs in NZ are metallic. When it rains, stormwater runoff conveys dissolved heavy metals (e.g., zinc) from the roof at concentrations multiple times higher than eco-acceptable and permissible discharge values, even when roof surfaces are painted or treated.

Our downpipe treatment products (Storminator™) solves two problems:

  1. Helps building owners comply with tightening regulations for treating heavy metal concentrations from their runoff.
  2. Diverts waste mussel shells from landfill.

We are tackling the issue of urban waterway degradation through independent science excellence. Our team consists of University of Canterbury academics, students, and a commercialisation team.
